Burning Smell Solved

So for the past 2 days whenever I parked my Element after driving it I would smell the distinct smell of burning plastic. So I popped my hood and checked my amp power cables, my PA loud speaker, etc. and found no splatter marks, nothing leaking, and no signs of any smoke or anything burning. I DID notice that my coolant reserve tank was empty though...hmmm...so I refilled it thinking that was the problem.

I got to school today and there was the smell again. GRRRRRR! I popped the radiator cap after class thinking I might have a coolant leak, but it was full. I got home and when I was getting some stuff out of the back of my element the smell was really strong! I smelled my exhaust pipe and it smelled normal, but I did happen to luck underneath at my muffle and found the problem. Apparently a bag had got caught under my E and hooked onto my muffler. When I drove my E the muffler heated up and melted the bag to the muffler causing the plastic to burn. Ugghhh! I was able to chizzle off quite a bit of the plastic, but not all of it.

Should I just wait for the rest of it to burn off? It is covering pretty much the entire underside of the muffler.

haha, you just have to live with it. I had an rx7 and the exhaust runs hot(it can start a grass fire when parked over grass). I had three exhaust on there and all three caught a bag, it's so hot that it just pass by and it would melt right on.

It's really nasty if it catches the cat where it is incinerated immediately. That smell sticks with you for a while.:-x
